125cc Licence

Obtaining a motorbike licence in the UK varies significantly from getting a car licence. Whether it’s your first bike or an addition to your collection, understanding the different types of motorcycle licences available is crucial.

Our handy guide provides an overview of what you need to know, from eligibility to the types of bikes you can ride with each licence.

Types of Motorbike Licences

AM licence From age 16, riders can use an AM licence to operate mopeds with a top speed of 28mph and light quadricycles.
A1 licence Available from age 17, this licence allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW, and you can ride on motorways and carry a pillion passenger.
A2 Licence At 19, riders can upgrade to an A2 licence, which permits riding bikes with a power output up to 35 kW.
A licence The most comprehensive licence, available from age 24 or to those who’ve held an A2 licence for two years, this allows you to ride any motorcycle regardless of power.

Licensing Routes

Direct Access This pathway lets you train for the highest licence your age allows, without prior experience.
Progressive Access Alternatively, you can incrementally upgrade your licence by gaining experience and taking additional tests over time. This method can accelerate access to an unrestricted A licence at age 21, rather than 24.
Practical Test Components The motorbike practical test is split into two modules. Module one includes off-road exercises like slalom, U-turns and emergency stops. Module two involves a 40-minute on-road test covering vehicle safety, road riding and independent riding. Both modules must be passed to achieve a licence, and specific requirements vary by licence type.
Staying Informed and Prepared Passing the motorcycle tests requires understanding the theoretical aspects of riding and practical skills. Remember, your provisional licence and CBT certification are just the beginning. With the right preparation and understanding of the testing requirements, you can navigate the path to your ideal motorbike licence. Whether choosing the direct or progressive route, each step brings you closer to enjoying the freedom of riding on open roads.
